House prices are on the rise, meaning first time buyers are buying smaller homes than in the past. Yet, when decorated properly, small homes can look just as gorgeous as their bigger counterparts, and with a few tricks, the space can be maximized to leave your home looking and feeling as spacious as possible.
1. Keep an open plan
If you’re living in a small flat or apartment, consider opening up the kitchen and living/ dining room to create one large, seamless living area. This allows you a larger space to be used for entertaining, and prevents your kitchen from getting hot and cramped while cooking.
2. Use glass dividers
If an open plan really isn’t your thing, use internal French doors such as these room dividers from Oak Wood Doors to let the light in and create more space visually while still maintaining separate, distinct rooms.
3. Build floor to ceiling bookshelves
Rather than creating storage space by adding in bulky wardrobes or shelves, build in a floor to ceiling bookshelf which covers an entire wall, while only taking off a foot of the room’s length. This will add height to the room, create tons of storage space, and reduce the need for other storage facilities such as drawers, which make the room less streamlined.
4. Decorate in all white
One of the simplest ways to maximize the space in a small home is to paint the room white and decorate with light, airy colors. Paint the walls and ceilings white, and use either a light carpet or consider getting white washed wood flooring. Use pastel or light colors for furniture and curtains, and inject personality with bright accents of colors, for example with cushions or flowers.
