You may not find your favorite Hot Mama’s Foods hummus on the shelves at Target or Trader Joe’s until fears of listeria subside. Instead, whip up a batch of tasty hummus at home using a handful of ingredients and your blender or food processor. In a matter of minutes, you’ll have enough chickpea spread or dip to serve to your guests this Memorial Day or any day.
Traditional Chickpea Hummus
Here are the ingredients and recipe you’ll need to make quick, traditional hummus:
- Two Cans of Chickpeas (Garbanzo Beans)
- Two Garlic Cloves (Crushed)
- ½ Cup of Water
- ¼ Cup of Tahini
- Fresh Lemon Juice (3 TBSP)
- Extra-Virgin Olive Oil (2 TBSP)
- Salt and Pepper (To Taste)
Rinse the chickpeas completely and pat dry with a paper towel. Combine the chickpeas and garlic in the blender or food processor and pulse several times until chopped. Add the remainder of the ingredients and blend until it reaches your desired consistency. If the hummus is thicker than you like, add additional water until it is smooth and creamy.
Variations on Tradition
If you prefer flavored hummus, you can add roasted garlic, black olives, roasted red peppers, spinach and artichoke, toasted pine nuts, sun-dried tomatoes, or jalapeno peppers. Experiment with a variety of different flavors and a variety of dippers. Kids love veggie sticks with hummus, and other options include pita bread, bagel chips, and crunchy pretzels.
You can also use hummus in place of condiments on sandwiches and wraps. Instead of mayonnaise or mustard, spread a healthy dollop of hummus on the bread and load it up with your choice of lean protein, fresh veggies, sprouts, and even seeds. Or, try your hand at making edamame, avocado, or black bean hummus instead.
